In the past 2 months we’ve been bombarded with lots of news and articles in regards to the 2019 novel coronavirus, most of us feeling overwhelmed with such negative information. Panic is everywhere, people all over the world are afraid to travel anymore, and a general “hysteria” covers every region where new case of the virus are diagnosed.
The truth is that for most people COVID-19 causes only mild illness, as per World Health Organisation.
Older people, and those with pre-existing medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes) appear to be more vulnerable.
The cautions you should take are similar to those against any other flu viruses.
Now, most of the news we get to see or hear are meant to inform us about the new virus, instead we are inundated by fear. That’s wrong. We must stay informed. We must consult official sources and understand what is really going on before we freak out.
Bear in mind that the mortality rates are low and getting lower as we speak (2.1% Nationwide, 4.9% Wuhan, 3.1% Hubei, and 0.16% other provinces) reported by the NHC of China. Numbers outside China are consistently lower: 55 deaths recorded by February 26, 2020.

More than that, there are optimistic voices that say: “Other viral respiratory diseases are seasonal, including influenza and therefore in many viral respiratory diseases we do see a decrease in disease in spring and summer,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said on a conference call Tuesday. “And so we can certainly be optimistic that this disease will follow suit.”
Again, World Health Organisation’s advice for all those who hesitate to plan their next vacation, fearing the 2019 novel coronavirus, is to stay calm, don’t cancel trips or do not hesitate to travel, follow basic personal hygiene habits, keep distance from people coughing or sneezing, avoid crowds if possible.
We must not be ignorant in regards to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak but we should stay realistic, updated and responsible. Panic will only lead to chaos and will make things much more difficult than they really are.
